Muriel, Peter and Chris Molsher; Jean Green and Glynn Warren; Jill and I, played the second match of the NDL Season, as ABC Wasps, at home to Bordon on Tuesday evening 12 April.
It was a closely contested match and, although we lost 6 to 3 in games, the total points difference was only 3, 93 to us and 96 to them. Also a few of the games, with a bit of luck, could easily have gone to us rather than them. Each of our 3 pairs won a game and Jean and Glynn came very close to winning their other two as well. I think that they were particularly keen to do well against their former club.

Southern Counties Result

"Your Southern Counties team - Hazel and David, Ian and Sonia, Christine and Mike won the second of our fourteen matches in the 2011 season by four games to one against The Ship Wreks at home on Thursday 14th April. Having beaten the Admiral in our first game three games to two we have now scored 9 wins to 3 which puts us in a very strong position, lets hope our form continues".

NDPL Claygate Bedouins v ABC Bees

On a glorious Sunday afternoon (10 April) the Bees travelled to Oxshott to play their second game of the season and I am afraid we suffered another 6-3 loss. It really was a case of deja vu as again we were whitewashed in the first round but we gradually became accustomed to the terrain winning 1 game in the second round and 2 in the third round. What a pity there was not a fourth round! I shall now go on holiday to lick my wounds and on my return plan the defeat of the Hornets who we play next. The team at Oxshott comprised Ingrid and me, George and Val, and Benny and Margaretha.

I am happy to report the the ABC Wasps recorded a victory against Admiral, away at the Limes, on Tuesday 5th April 3 games to 2. A very good result for our first match of the 2011 season. The team was Mike, Christine, Ian, Marie Helen, David and Hazel . We won both the triples very decisively and David and Hazel won their doubles match. Well done team

NDPL ABC Bees v Crondall Lions

The Bees had their first game of the season on Saturday afternoon 2 April at Kirdford. It was a pleasant day for playing boules and we played on an immaculately prepared piste thanks to the services of chairman Mike which was much appreciated.
Sadly it was not a good start, losing the match 6-3. The first round proved disastrous for us, losing all three games, although one of the games was time expired with the score at 12-11, and one more end, who knows! The second round was an improvement, with two wins for the Bees, but unfortunately we could only manage one more win in the final round. Congratulations to Peter and Mavis for winning two of their games, and a "mention in dispatches" for Benny, who playing in only two games, won one and nearly won the above mentioned time expired game!
Our team of seven comprised Tony R Tony F George Peter and Mavis and Benny and Margaretha.

ABC Wasps, away to Oxshott Hotshots on Thu, 31 March

The Bonhams, Bobby Newberry, Jean Vanstone, Jill and I, played the first game of the NDL Season, as ABC Wasps, away to Oxshott Hotshots on Thursday evening 31 March.
We started the season on a suitably low note being thrashed eight games to one. It was an uphill struggle.
We turned up expecting to play Boules, but we found that we were required to play Roules ( pardon the pidgin French ). We had just started to master the technique by the last games, to the extent that Derek and Jean Bonham managed a 12-6 timed-out win and therefore share our " Man of the Match Award".
It was all very friendly and hospitable, but we will do our damnest to have our revenge when the Hotshots return to Kirdford to play our sort of game.

ABC VISIT TO TAC PETANQUE LE TOUQUET

Last weekend, 26th March Saturday – 28th March Monday ABC made an exploratory visit to TAC Petanque Le Touquet. This was the culmination of discussions between Bernard Fourdraine President of TAC Petanque Le Touquet, Ian, Peter and MarieHelene. We were accompanied by Carolyn, Margaret and Mavis. The primary objective was to see if ABC could establish a friendly boule playing relationship with a French club. I am delighted to report that Bernard Fourdraine, his colleague committee and club members made us most welcome. A secondary objective was to understand the practicalities of travelling to Le Touquet for boule weekends.
We played boule on Saturday in the same manner as our own club meetings. On Saturday evening Bernard and two of his committee entertained us to Dinner at the “Fireman” a bar restaurant adjacent to the club terrain. We presented TAC Petanque Le Touquet with mementoes of our club. On Sunday Bernard took us on a comprehensive sightseeing tour of Le Touquet at the end of which we refreshed ourselves with Sunday lunch with Bernard as our guest.
Monday was a day of leisure and travel making our way home after our labours. We understand that Bernard is to invite us as a club to play boule in Le Touquet this autumn.

Cranleigh - Vallendar Twinning Association - Vallendar Visit 2011

I have recently learnt that the German end of the Cranleigh – Vallendar Twinning Association are to visit Cranleigh in June this year. Members will recall that on their last visit we entertained them at Kirdford. Following a conversation with the Cranleigh/Vallendar secretary it is likely that a similar event may be repeated on Sunday 5th June. Apparently they greatly enjoyed our petanque, the clubs hospitality and friendliness. The pub also played a strong hand.

Semur –en-Auxois Twinning Meeting

I attended this social meeting on Friday 18th March 2011 as the representative ABC club member. This event was held at the home of Julia Brown president of the twinning association. It is planned that members of the twinning association will visit Semur in June this year. I will publish further details as they appear. On behalf of the French end of the Twinning association ABC were given a pennant showing the arms of Semur. It hangs in the clubhouse. I report that the wine was fine as was the cheese.

The first of our internal competitions took place on Saturday 19th March 2011 on a glorious spring morning with an excellent attendance by members.
Playing 3 games each in a melee format the eventual winners of the day were:

Marie Helene retains the trophy for the coming year. The winner and runners up each received a bottle of wine with which to celebrate.

I am sure all members will join us in offering our congratulations and good wishes to Kath on this occasion.
We are also happy to note Kath's recent appointment to the Chair of the Cranleigh Petanque Club.

New Year 2011

Well it is now almost 15th January 2011 - New year could be officially over (although Dan Dyas always says this on June 1st!). Two weeks ago on New Year's Day we had a good turnout at Kirdford and played in very mild conditions considering how cold and snowy it had been only the previous week. The members who attended were in good spirits (some more so than others) and much kissing and hugging was going on under the guise of wishing each other a Happy New Year! Unfortunately wires had got crossed and Linda & Karl did not realise that 1st January was a Saturday and that we would be playing, which resulted in us having no lunch! Never mind we could all do with losing a bit of weight after the excesses of Christmas. One player excelled themselves by being fannied twice - it was thought that it would be appropriate to award her with the Fanny Trouphy - Quel Dommge - it has disappeared! so, who has it? Please return it forthwith. I know you will be dying to know who is to be the new recipient of the trophy - it is Ingrid aka Santa's little helper, the elf!
Ian is in the process of arranging the playing teams for the coming year - let's hope that we do a bit better than last year!
Here's to a happy and successful New Year!

The Euro Cup

"Unfortunately the team of Mike, Christine, Ian, Sonia, Carolyn and Ingrid, were soundly beaten by Sandown and Shanklin in the second round of the Euro cup on Sunday 9th January, played at Kirdford. We infact only won 1 game of the 7, this was a tripple of Ian, Carolyn and Ingrid. Many of the other matches were close encounters and if luck had favoured us we could have had a better result. The IOW team were very pleasant people and an enjoyable day was had by all, they were very impressed with our set up and have promised to return."

Christines' Christmas Cake
Carolyn Tuthill reports:
Now that we are enveloped in snow, snow and more snow on the way - we must reflect on how lucky we were to have such a mild window to enjoy our Christmas lunch at the Foresters on December 11th. It was very fortunate that we had such a good turnout and that most people who had booked for the previous week were able to attend. A few folks could not make it but then there were others who could now come, so it balanced out in the end and Karl & Linda did us proud serving a lovely meal to 44 of us.
The day started with much hilarity when our esteemed Captain decided to show us his feminine side by donning a tutu! whether this really went with his thick yellow tights and walking boots is another matter - he was also wearing makeup which had been applied by the elf (aka Ingrid)!
Ian arranged play in two teams, mostly triples as with such a high turnout we were using the terrain to its capacity. The first game always ends in much laughter if not a fair bit of danger as we had to play with our opposite hand. Some members claim to be ambidextrous so they had an advantage! This round went to the Santas as did the next two making them the overall winners of some chocolate santas, the runners up, the Reindeers, were not forgotten!
After the first game we went into the pub for coffee and a slice of Christine Kateley's excellent Christmas cake, beautifully decorated as always, play then resumed and we had a regular game followed by one in which we had to throw the boule standing on one leg. Some of us who do Yoga fould this a lot easier than others! Although Ian had said that we could have a supporter! Again much hilarity.
We finally went into lunch at 1.30 and started on the crackers and poppers before enjoying our meal - it was then time for a visit from Santa and, as usual, a weird and wonderful array of presents was distributed amongst us. I'm sure some members go to a great deal of trouble to find just the right thing and it all adds to the ambience of the day.
As I write this, I am wondering just when we will all be able to play again! The weather has been something else and I am wondering just how my Christmas guests are going to fare in getting here - no doubt many of you will be in the same boat.
I will take this opportunity on behalf of all the members and the committee of Amities Boule Club to wish all who read this a very happy Christmas and a Guid new year!

ABC 17th AGM - 27 November 2010
Carolyn Tuthill reports:
We had been quite apprehensive about the weather with all the warnings of snow, and were concerned that we would not have a large enough turnout of members to allow the AGM to go ahead. However we need not have feared as we were lucky enough to drive to Kirdford in hazy sunshine, but bitter cold! 42 brave souls joined us for the AGM at Kirdford Village Hall. As has become the custom, members were greeted with a cup of coffee and biscuits kindly made by Melanie and Jill Myles, I'm sure this was most welcome in the cold weather.
Paul welcomed us all to the meeting, reading out a list of apologies of those who could not be there, including Lucienne and Geoffrey Cooper who we were hoping would join us for our Christmas lunch next week. However, unfortunately, Geoffrey had a fall on Thursday evening and ended up in the Royal Surrey with a broken hip. He was due to be operated on that day, which was also his 91st birthday. Cards were produced to wish him well, these were taken along to Lucienne by Joan Dyas for onward transmission to Geoff.
The meeting was a good one, Paul gave a report on his last year as Chairman outlining some of the highs and lows of his time in Office. He advised us that there would not now be a contest for his successor, as Ian Fox had stepped down in favour of Mike Kateley. Ian had made this decision as he felt that there could be a conflict of loyalties, and lead to a division in the Club. Paul commended Ian for his selflessness and hoped he would continue in his role as Club Captain which he does so well.
Paul then read the Treasurer's Report on behalf of David Lipman who was on holiday. The minor blip on the dates had been corrected!
Ian gave his report as Club Captain and hoped that we would have a more successful year next year.
After this respite, Paul then reported on the progress that had at last been made on the agreement with the Brewery - also telling us that our host pub - the Foresters Arms had been voted Pub of the Year by Hall & Woodhouse (The Brewery) We feel that our presence there must have given Karl & Linda a great boost!!
The Brewery Document is now in its final stages, almost ready to sign and Paul will continue to oversea this to its conclusion.
Paul then called upon Valerie Esplen to clarify what she meant by asking us to consider a change to the Club Strip. I think some members were rather disappointed at this stage as they had read Club Strip on the Agenda and expected something quite else!! - far too cold I'm afraid. In the event, Valerie said that many members did not think the yellow polo shirts were at all flattering - (some bright spark remarked that the colour seemed to suit Anne Widecombe all the more reason for a change!!).
A short discussion followed and it was agreed that a sub committee would be set up to investigate other possibilities.
We then came to the election of Officers and Committee for the next year. Paul of course,was stepping down as Chairman, this left a vacancy on the Committee and this would be filled by Bob Webster. The remaining members of the Committee would serve for a further year.
At this point Paul officially handed over the Chair to Mike Kateley who had been returned unopposed as Chairman. Mike then thanked everyone for their support and Ian for standing down in his favour, and said he looked forward to serving as Chairman for, hopefully, the next three years.
There being no other business, Mike closed the meeting at 11.05pm
During the proceedings, Ingrid had been accepting Subs, any members who have not yet paid are invited to do so at the first available opportunity.

2010 Competitors Lunch

Remembrance Sunday 14th November, was indeed a day to remember for 28 of our members who met in the Band Room in Cranleigh for the annual end of season party. As always an array of delicious dishes was brought along by not just the ladies! We enjoyed an afternoon of good company, good food and a few glasses of something to help it on its way! Paul welcomed us all to the party and advised us to tuck in! Ian had a few words to say afterwards - the fewer the better I think! Unfortunately both David Lipman and Mike Kately were unable to attend - David & Hazel are in the USA visiting relatives and Mike & Christine were up in Liverpool for their daughter's wedding, so we were unable to have reports from them as team Captains! Ingrid, who Captained the Wasps this year, was there but thought the least said the better! Ian encouraged us to look forward and do better next year! To anyone reading this who was not invited; take part in the matches next year and an invitation will come your way - what better incentive to you need! Many thanks to all the cooks who, as usual, did a splendid meal for us all, to Sonia & Ingrid for helping me on the day, and to Ian for putting out the tables, and mostly to all who came along and made it a very happy day.

Ingrid, who Captained the Wasps this year, was there but thought the least said the better! Ian encouraged us to look forward and do better next year! To anyone reading this who was not invited; take part in the matches next year and an invitation will come your way - what better incentive to you need! Many thanks to all the cooks who, as usual, did a splendid meal for us all, to Sonia & Ingrid for helping me on the day, and to Ian for putting out the tables, and mostly to all who came along and made it a very happy day.

Halloween Boules Melee - Sun 31 October 2010

Sunday 31st October 2010 dawned wet but, fortunately, not cold!
We were very pleased to welcome members of Cranleigh Petanque Club to Kirdford for a Halloween Melee and in all 36 brave souls turned up to play in the rather murky conditions!
I am pleased to report that all entered into the spirit of things and we had many weird and wonderful costumes on display. We had more than a coven of witches headed by chief witch Sonia who rather excelled herself with stripy tights a hideous nose with a rather nasty wart on it, green face, wig and even purple wings! She had also very kindly made cup cakes with disgusting toppings for coffee time! No wonder the consensus of opinion was that she deserved to be awarded the prize for best dressed player!
Mind you she was up against some strong competition, Di & Mac were very striking as Dracula and his Mol! Mike was one of a couple of skeletons, his problem was trying to get out of his costume to answer a call of nature - I did offer to help him with the aid of our first aid scissors but he declined mumbling something about "the snip"!
Dan Dyas came with a Father Christmas hat on with the label - "Should have gone to Specsavers!" Several folks took pictures which I hope will be forthcoming to add to the Blog.
Although this was primarily a fun day, we did run a proper individual melee the results of which were:
Ann Z (Cranleigh) - 3 wins - +11
Barbara Porter (ABC) - 2 wins 1 draw - +17
Joan Dyas (Cranleigh/ABC) - 2 wins 1 loss - +23
Other end of the spectrum! friendliest players:-

Roger Z
Peter Ball
It was difficult at times to know just who you were talking to as many players were wearing masks - however I think most of them decided that it was too difficult to play in them so all was soon revealed!
Christine K was very stiking in a purple wig which she complained about putting her off her game after she and yours truly narrowly lost our first game!
In all it was a very happy and successful day and Sonia & I are all set to repeat the event next year if there is enough support.
