Boules Club Charity Day 1st Oct 2011

Carolyn Tuthill reports:

A fantastic day for our Charity on 1st October, 29o+ Sun shines on the righteous! Good turnout of members, those unable to attend also contributed prizes for the raffle and bring & buy. Sonia and Valerie had been busy baking and produced three cakes which were offered at £1 a slice to go with morning coffee - this was a great success and brought in over £20!

Linda & Karl and the bar staff bought raffle tickets and cakes to help swell the coffers.

The melee, for which all had contributed £1 to play in, was won by Sonia Lee with a cracking +23, joint runners up just behind her were Benny Goodman and Bob Webster, a booby prize was produced from the raffle (!) and presented to Ingrid Richards who managed a spectacular minus score!!

I have now counted out all the pennies, pounds etc.(don't know quite what to do with Peter's dime!) and can report that we will be sending a cheque to
Chestnut Tree House Hospice for Children, for the sum of £160.00

Many thanks to all who contibuted - I think the Charity day makes us all feel how fortunate we are. Please give some thought as to which Charity you would like us to support next year.

Sociaboules at Handcross Sun, 25 Sep 2011

Carolyn Tuthill reports:

Mike, Christine, Carolyn and Sonia attended the Sociaboules at Handcross today - an excellent day of Boules over the course of the morning and afternoon. The only blip was that the local pub had closed down and the nearest one was unable to accomodate us for lunch. We, therefore, ended up buying sandwiches from the local Spar Shop! Never mind - all part of life's rich pattern - we didn't win any prizes either, except three in the raffle - all the more reason to have a Charity Day raffle!

NDPL ABC Wasps v Cranleigh Thurs 1 Sept

Peter Molsher reports:

Based on the 4-5 result of our away match we had expectations of turning the tables at home. In the event they were not realised and with Cranleigh in better form and one or two ‘rub of the  green ‘shots going against at crucial points we lost 2-7

Despite the result being  determined after two games the best performances in the third came very close to cutting the deficit with Jean and Derek (13-6), John and Bobby (10-12), Muriel and Christopher (11-13)  all producing their best performance

A B C Hornets

David Lipman reports:

Two very interesting games this week both at Oxshott.
We once again met our old enemies the Oxshott Otters at their venue and played the usual game of marbles on their dry and dusty terrain. Regretably we lost 7-2. However, on the bright side, we had gained valuable experience on playing this sort of game for our match on Thursday against the Claygate Bedouins.
Zut Alors, On Thursday it rained, turning the dust bowl into a mud bath! But your Hornets rose to the occasion and managed to win the match 6-3 against a very tough but very pleasant group of 8 players.

NDPL ABC Wasps v Oxshott Hotshots Mon 15 August, 7.30pm

Alex Myles reports:

At the start on our home ground, Peter and Muriel put down a marker by winning 13-8. Both the Bonhams. and Jean Vanstone and I, failed to respond. We lost 13-7, despite having been 7-0 up after 3 ends, and Derek and Jean had " the worst game we have ever played " to lose 13-1. In the next round, Derek and Jean recovered to win 13-6 and Jean and I won 13-9. Peter and Chris lost 13-4 so that we were now at 3 games all. I thought that we might be in with a chance and was pleasantly surprised when we won all the next 3, Derek and Jean and Jean and I both winning 13-3 and Chris and Muriel winning 13-7, to win the match by 6 games to 3.

A splendid team effort, I reckon. Thanks to you all.

NDPL ABC Wasps v Cranleigh Thu 4 August, 7.30pm

Alex Myles reports:

A Near Miss. I thought, at one point, that we were going to beat them on their home ground !!
At the end of the second group of games we were leading 4 -2.
Jean Vanstone and I had won 2 ( one of which was 13-0 ).
John Sylvester and Bobby, and the Molshers, had also each won 1.
I was sure that we could pick up one more to win, but it was not to be.
Cranleigh won all the last three games.
As I expected, Jean and I were well beaten by Jeff and his partner, who then had 3 wins.
John and Bobby also lost.
Peter and Muriel were initially well ahead but ran out steam, under the floodlights, to lose 13-11.
The final result was therefore Cranleigh 5 Wasps 4. Quel dommage !!

Osborne Trophy 2011

The Winner - Mavis Rauch

with the Runners-Up

Carolyn Tuthill reports:

Saturday 13th August 2011 - a reasonably bright day for the Osborne Trophy.
This trophy is played for annually in memory of Rodney Osborne, past
Chairman of the Club. We had a very good turnout of members playing
doubles on all seven pistes, the result at the end of the three game
individual melee was a resounding win for Mavis Rauch with a magnificant
score of 3 wins - +30, runner up with another very good score of 3 wins -
+25 was Marie Helene Lopez. Only two others had 3 wins - third was
Christine Kateley and fourth, Tony Fox. All received a bottle of wine. We
were very pleased to have Sharmoine Osborne with us to present Mavis with
the trophy which will be duly engraved and given to her to keep for the
coming year. This completes our club internal competitions for this year.
Congratulations to all the worthy winners of the silverware - take good care
of it!! Carolyn

NDPL ABC Wasps v Crondall Tigers Thu 23 June

Alex Myles reports:

Apologies for a belated report of this match which Wasps played at Crondall..

If anything, the Tigers team was stronger than the team they fielded when we played them at Kirdford and the scoreline was identical, Tigers won 7 games to 2.

Paul and Melanie, whom I had co-opted because of regular player unavailability ( many thanks to them ) won 1 game, as did Jean Green and Glynn. Jill and I had the doubtful pleasure of being "The Weakest Link" by losing all our 3 games.

In total, Wasps have now won 1 match and lost 5, with 4 still to be played. We still hope to win some of these.

Betty's Plate - 9th July 2011

The Winner - Paul Roberts

The RunnerUp - Sue Ross

Carolyn Tuthill reports:

A wonderful turnout (over 30) for this most coveted prize! Despite the rain over the last few days, we were lucky to play the three game melee in reasonable weather.

We were very pleased to have Kath Stebbing with us to award the Plate, which she had put up in memory of her friend and long time companion Betty Mader who many of us remember fondly.

It was nice to see our former Chairman, Joan Dyas and Dan again, along with Sue Ross who now also play for Cranleigh Petanque Club.

After the play was over we had only 4 people with 3 wins! Fourth was Mavis Rauch + 11, third was Bobby Newberry +13, runner up was Sue Ross +20 and the overall winner with a score of +24 was another former Chairman, Paul Roberts!

Well done to all those who took part in making this a most successful day.

Next Club competition is the Osborne Trophy on August 13th (note change of date from 6th). Details nearer the time.
